CENFET identifies woes of education sector




MAKURDI—lack of political will by successive Nigerian governments in the last 14 years to embark on far-reaching reforms in the education sector has been identified as the reason for the decay in the sector.

Executive Chairman of Centre for Non-Formal Education and Training, CENFET, Dr. Rosemary Nwangwu, made this known while delivering a lecture at the one-day breakfast meeting for newsmen by the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF ‘A’ Field Office in Makurdi.

Nwangwu said: “Nigeria’s education sector has failed to yield the desired results over the years due to persistent policy somersault and because governments in the country have been paying lip service to the much craved reforms in the sector.

“Right from the Obasanjo’s administration, governments had keyed into the UNESCO plan for reform in the education sector but unfortunately we have not had the chance to lift the sector because of lack of political will by our leaders to implement the recommendations of UNESCO and other relevant agencies and bodies.”

She said the sector would only attain the desired height if it was better funded and Nigerian leaders showed greater commitment to uplifting educational.

She said: “We must go back to the drawing board and also ensure that policies and programmes in the sector are accorded top priority in such a manner that education would be easily accessible to every Nigerian child irrespective of his or her location in any part of the country.”

Chief of Field-A Office, Mr. Charles Nzuki, said:  “UNI-CEF is prepared to partner all relevant agencies and governments to attain better education standards in Nigeria.

“The desire of UNICEF is to ensure that every Nigerian child is availed good and qualitative education in line with universal best practices that would prepare them for the challenges of life.”
