‘Forgetfulness can be treated’

The Executive Director, Health Forever Limited, Bimbo Okubena, answers the first question; the representative of Wakunaga of America Company Limited, producers of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract, Sam Ayeni handles the second.

Dementia is a term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimers is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a specific disease. It is a term that describes various symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer’s is a disease that can last a really long time and cost a lot of money — so much money, in fact, that the United States government is paying attention with new legislation.

In 2011President Barrack Obama signed the National Alzheimer’s Project Act into law. About $500 million goes to Alzheimer’s research, and the new law includes an additional $100 million for treatment, research, medicine and diagnostic tools.

Dr. Dorene Rentz, a neuropsychologist and co-director of Harvard Medical School’s Centre for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment, has been studying Alzheimer’s patients for three decades. In 2005, the breakthrough was the discovery of something called amyloid plaque in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s. Not all people with the plaque go on to develop the disease, however.

More than five million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease and the National Institute on Aging estimates that that number is going to triple by 2050 — in part due to aging baby boomers.

The cost of coping with the disease—estimated at $215 billion—is projected to rise to half a trillion dollars by 2050. That amount will likely tax their overburdened health care system, the economy and the families of those affected.

Dementia manifestations are on the increase as a neurological disease in most African countries too, including Nigeria and remain a major medical and social problem globally. Although hyperdopaminergic activity is generally believed to play a crucial role in the symptomatology of the disease, most Africans believe that the disease is due to supernatural forces against the mental well-being of individuals and as such, cure cannot be found through modern medicine or orthodox medical practice.

Early signs of Alzheimer include, but not limited to, memory loss that disrupts daily life; challenges in planning or solving problems; difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure; confusion with time or place; trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships; misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps; withdrawal from work or social activities and changes in mood and personality.

At Health Forever, our study and knowledge of tropical plants has allowed us to provide quality herbal remedies and health supplements for the improved well-being of people. Through our ongoing research efforts, we have been able to identify and develop herbal remedies that assist the body in preventing the causes of and fighting against life-threatening diseases, such as Alzheimer.

We adopt a holistic approach towards health management, which leads to using herbs in the most complete and natural form. The body can then utilise the full, undiminished balance of ingredients provided by nature with the added benefits of quality control and assurance achieved through our careful manufacturing process. Our product, Jobelyn, is a herbal nutritional supplement extracted from the venerable and gluten-free Sorghum Bicolor plant.

The trio of Dr Itivere Adrian Omogbiya, Dr Adegbuyi Oladele Aderibigbe and Dr Adewale Ganiyu Bakre of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, has conducted research on Jobelyn and concluded that pretreatment ameliorates symptoms of psychosis in experimental models of rodents. This is published in Journal of Basic Clinical Physiological and Pharmacological (2013. DOI 10.1515/jbcpp-2012-0073).

This research showed that Jobelyn demonstrated antipsychotic activity devoid of the cataleptic effect of traditional neuroleptic agents and this may be suggestive of a preferential antagonism of D 2 -mediated dopaminergic activity. Psychosis is a chronic neurological disorder and it remains a major medical and social problem in most African countries. Jobelyn is a commercial polyherbal formulation that has been acclaimed to show beneficial effects in neurological disorders. Although it is being prescribed in many hospitals, including the Yaba Psychiatric Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, this study was undertaken at Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria to evaluate its effects on animal models predictive of human psychosis. These findings suggest that Jobelyn exhibits antipsychotic-like activity, devoid of the adverse effect of cataleptic behaviour, and may offer some beneficial effects in the symptomatic relief of psychotic ailments like Alzheimer.
