‘My wife didn’t deserve this cruel death’

Mrs. Olusola Arokoyu, a banker, was among the victims of the Sunday’s Dana air mishap. GBENGA ADENIJI’s visit to her husband reveals that the development has left him devastated

Ile Epo, Abule Egba area of Lagos State.  Two days after the Dana plane crashed in Iju area of Lagos.

Tragedy had just struck the household. The mother of the house, Mrs. Olusola Arokoyu, is among the 153 passengers that died in the accident.

What childhood can cause! The only boy of the family was seen playing cheerfully around in the house,  oblivious of the ugly development. The couple had three kids-a boy and two girls.

But Mr. Oluremi Arokoyu really knows where the shoe pinches. He is the head of the house; husband of the late Oluremi. So, he bears the burden of the sudden loss. He says his wife’s death has devastated him.

Arokoyu, who intermittently looked up, staring at nothingness as he spoke to sympathisers added that his wife never deserved such a cruel death.

He recalled that she was in Abuja on Friday along with a colleague to train some of the employees of Sterling Bank which she worked for.

Arokoyu said in Yoruba, ‘‘Her death is painful to me. She never gave me any problem. It is not Sola that should die. She was the closest person to me. I love her so much. I don’t know how I can do anything by myself now that my closest friend was no more. This priceless woman handled all the documentation for my first trip abroad.

“Most times, I was faced with the problem of how to recall most of the details in my travelling papers because she did all. At the point of entry I would have to compose myself quickly before questions arose on whether I was not the one who completed it by being clumsy.’’

He stated that during a trip to Nigeria with his family from the UK sometime ago, he had to stay awake all night for fear.

‘‘I was scared that I did wrong by putting all my family on the same plane. That day, I resolved never to do such. But how was I to know that death awaited my lovely wife on a local flight in my country. Devil is blameworthy and I think our prayers were not enough for my wife didn’t deserve this cruel death, ‘‘he said with tears welled up in his eyes.

When our correspondent was introduced to Oluremi by a member of the family, he mumbled greetings and later launched into a sleep.

‘He is not really sleeping. That has been the way he behaves since the news broke. He loves his wife so much and as things are, only God can console him for he has been in pensive mood since the incident,’’ a member of the family told this correspondent.
