Eighteen Civil Society Organisations, led by the African Network for Environmental and Economic Justice and End Impunity Now Campaign on Thursday in Abuja protested against the continued detention of the Executive Director of ANEEJ, Mr. David Ugolor, by the Police.
The activists said Ugolor was being held for alleged involvement in the killing of the Principal Private Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, despite the confessional statements by six arrested suspects to the State Security Services that they were armed robbers.
They also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to set up a special security committee to review all investigations on Oyerinde’s murder.
The committee, the group said, should be mandated to advise the police on the real suspects to be charged to court.
The Deputy Director of ANEEJ, Mr. Leo Atakpu, and spokesperson for EINC, Mr. Jaye Gaskia, who made the recommendation at a press briefing, said Ugolor’s health had deteriorated in the last two weeks and his fundamental human rights had been “heavily violated.”
The CSOs said, “We sturdily believe that the report of the SSS which tallies with the initial statement given by the widow of late Comrade Oyerinde to the Nigerian Police is the true position of things and should be upheld.
“The suspects never mentioned David Ugolor even when asked in the open by journalists last Wednesday. The questions to ask now are: where is the police accusation coming from? Who is this fellow policemen are holding to frame up David Ugolor? What is his crime history? Who is after David Ugolor?
“We seem to be back in the dark days when outspoken Nigerians are victimised and hounded by the state as is the case of David Ugolor.
“We strongly recommend that President Goodluck Jonathan who ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Security Services to fish out the killers of Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, in the face of the seeming controversy, should set up a Special Security committee or whatever nomenclature Mr. President deems fit.”(punch)
