The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has condemned the hosting of African First Ladies by Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, under the aegis of the African First Ladies for Peace Mission (AFLPM).
The event is billed for July 24 to July 27, 2012.
In a statement signed by Engineer Rotimi Fashakin, its Publicity Secretary, the CPC dismissed the event with “utter disgust,” describing as “befuddling” the attendant huge depletion of the Nation’s scarce resources, with 200 exotic cars reportedly being ordered for the convenience of the guests.
The CPC said it was stupefying that this unbudgeted spending is coming when many states of the Federation are on a shoe-string budget because of the depressed Economy, with the May allocations not fully released to them.
“It is at this time that the Jonathan administration has chosen to host a rather feckless and utterly profligate jamboree,” the statement said.
“Undoubtedly, the Jonathan regime, in word and deed, does not really ‘give a damn’ if the Nation totters so long the avaricious fancies of the First family are accomplished. There is palpable unease in the Land because of the depressed economy; many patriotic leaders in other climes would have used times like this to invest the scarce resources in invigorating the productive capacity of the Economy.”
It wholeheartedly condemned what it called an infernal show of insensitivity on the part of the Jonathan administration and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying that such profligate spending has become synonymous with PDP administrations because it was exactly the same way that the former former President Olusegun Obasanjo spent fortunes on the COJA games in 2003.
“We do hope that the National Assembly (NASS) shall query the source of funding this fiesta,” the statement said.
