Airhiavbere’s campaign office and house abandoned

The personal house and campaign office of the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in today’s election, Charles Airhiavbere, were deserted on Friday night.

Both locations were devoid of activities in sharp contrast to what obtained before Friday.

Our correspondent observed that the PDP candidate and his men were having a meeting at an undisclosed venue when the areas were visited.

Many of the retired general’s lieutenants were not seen around as they had been deployed in their various towns and villages to ensure victory for him in today’s election.

At his Boundary Street home in GRA, only a handful of riot policemen were noticed keeping guard, while his Aiguobasimwin office was completely desolate as at 7.30 pm.

Just outside the area, a dozen truck loads of heavily armed and stern looking Army personnel patrolled the major roads.

Meanwhile, all seemed to be set for voters in the 192 wards and 18 local government areas of the three senatorial districts of Edo State today in a battle that promises to be largely unpredictable.

Our correspondent observed that security personnel had been stationed at strategic locations in the South, North and Central senatorial zones to avert any violent eruption.

Specifically, it was gathered that the three major towns of Benin, Auchi and Ekpoma, where the battle is expected to be fierce, had been effectively covered.

Also, most entry points to the waterways in the riverine communities of Ovia North-East and Ovia South-West were under heavy surveillance to prevent any invasion.

There had been allegations that some ex-militants from Rivers State were being mobilised by one of the parties.

The major contenders in today’s election are the incumbent Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the ACN, Airhiavbere of the PDP and Chief Solomon Edebiri of the ANPP.

At the Dennis Osadebe Government House, there were still skeletal official activities, though work had closed at 12 noon.
