STUDENTS of the Edo state owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma, yesterday, gave a seven day ultimatum to the Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gen.Charles Airhiavbere, to tender apology to the students for referring to them as armed robbers.
Airhiavbere had in a televised governorship debate on AIT Thursday, said the university was breeding armed robbers while trying to emphasize that the government of Governor Adams Oshiomhole failed to improve the plight of the university.
But reacting in a statement yesterday in Benin City, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the university, Comrade John Ologie, said the comment was a great disservice to the people of the state, particularly when “ we were recently referred to as armed robbers by a man who seek to lead us as governor”. According to the statement, “as representatives of our students, we totally frown at the use of such derogative language to describe our students cum alumni by the PDP candidate who adversely was lacking in ideas to marshal out his points on what he will do if elected as governor of Edo state in the live debate.
“Not wanting to join issues with the PDP who has ruled Edo state for about ten years without any significant progress, we are at words on how such a character as Gen.Airhiavbere emerged as their gubernatorial candidate. It is note worthy to mention here that the PDP candidate has just alighted the world that his children are not schooling in Nigeria talk less of in Edo state because of his negative perception of Nigerian Universities Students which AAU is a fore runner” it stated.
While vowing to ensure the defeat of the PDP candidate if he fails to apologize to the students, the statement commended the efforts of Governor Oshiomhole on infrastructural drive taking Place in AAU, “and we want more of this kind of gesture and only those who have proved to be on the side of the people will be supported to remain in power”.
