Kogi State recorded a fresh bomb explosion at Iyara on Friday night, the second in one week.
A policeman died in the latest blast triggered by robbers who attacked a bank and a police post in the home town of Senator Smart Adeyemi, Chairman, Senate Committee of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident also left a policewoman injured.
The robbers battled fruitlessly to access the vaults of the bank after which they resorted to the use of bomb. When that also failed, they fled the scene.
A source in the town said: “The armed gang caught us unawares. They were desperate to get into the bank leading to a spate of explosions. For some minutes, the town was under siege as everyone remained indoors. When they were done with the bank, they also targeted the police station. We later sent distress calls to the police and other security agents, who came to restore normalcy.”
The Coordinator of the National Emergency Agency, (NEMA) for the zone, Mr. Ishaya said: “The Executive Secretary of Kogi State Management Agency told us that the bombing took place between 8pm and 9pm on Friday.
“According to Kogi SEMA, it was case of a suspected armed robbery which left one policeman dead and a policewoman wounded.”
The Head of NEMA Public Relations Unit, Yushau Shuaibu confirmed the explosion in Iyara, saying: “NEMA confirms that several bombs exploded in Iyara, Kogi State. Robbery is suspected rather than militancy. During the bombing, a bank and a police station were damaged. A policeman lost his life and an injured policewoman is in hospital.”
