Bama: NEMA distributes relief materials




MAIDUGURI— The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has started distributing relief materials to victims of last week’s mayhem in Bama where 55 persons, mainly security personnel were killed when the Boko Haram sect attacked the town.

The relief materials were distributed in batches to the Nigerian Army barracks, the police and the prison authorities in the area for families that were attacked.

Another batch of relief materials was given to the Shehu of Bama, Alhaji Kyari Umar Ibn Elkanemi, to distribute among his subjects who were affected.

A delegation from NEMA headquarters led by the Director of Administration, Dr. Zanna Muhammed, was in Bama, weekend, to deliver the materials to the victims.

In a statement by the North-East Information Officer of the agency, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, the displaced persons as a result of the attack were sheltered at the Mobile Police Base in Bama.

According to Ibrahim, during the visit of the team to the 202 Tank Battalion Barracks of the Nigerian Army stationed in Bama which was also attacked by the insurgents, its commanding officer, Lt. Col Adamu Laka, commended the NEMA team for its efforts in managing disasters and promised that the Nigerian Army will continue to collaborate with NEMA as a critical stakeholder to provide support to the agency anytime the need arises.

The Area Commander of the Nigerian Police in Bama Sagir Abubakar while receiving the materials on behalf of the displaced police families pointed out that the agency should provide more tents for the Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, because the raining season will commence.
