About 11 people were feared dead in a ghastly canoe accident in Dukku water after a canoe carrying 17 people mostly children  capsized when it hit a log of wood yesterday night in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi state capital.

The incident which occurred on Friday nigh saw rescue effort  operation by the local people going on uptill Saturday, as more bodies were being recovered as at the time of filing this report .According to investigation by newsmen ,the canoe owner was said to have over loaded mostly children rushing to cross the water to reach their homes before night fall .

On crossing the water ,the over loaded canoe capsized after hit a big log believed to be inserted by a construction company handling the dredging and construction of a bridge in the area .

Narrating what happened at the scene of the accident to journalist, Alhaji. Shehu Tela who lost his brother’s daughter said, ‘After Ishai prayer at about 8:30 pm, a boy called me to inform me if I was awere of what happened at the Dukku water side and I replied no .He said news just came to him that Sa ‘adatu was among the ones who drowned in the water and her body is still missing. I quickly rushed to the place around 930 pm.

Tela said that on reaching the place he saw rescue operation going on. Those I met there told me that 17 people mostly children are in the canoe that are from the near-by villages of Sabuwa , Kalangu ,and Dango who were on their way home.

‘When the canoe hit the log three children were said to have jumped and made it, while the remaining ones were said to have drowned with the canoe, six children as at now were saved and 11 still missing, but feared dead among the missing was my brothers daughter who is 14 years old” and since yesterday Friday uptill today Saturday we cannot find the bodies of the remaining children , he said .
