Buoyfat community in Egbe Idimu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State is preparing for a showdown with Power Holding Company of Nigeria over ‘outrageous bills.
The community, operating under the aegis of Central Coordinating Committee of Egbe Central Community Development, said it found the estimated bills given to the residents by the PHCN in June very high.
It rejected the bills allegedly increased by PHCN by between 100 and 300 per cent and therefore demanded immediate reversal
In a letter to PHCN Chief Executive Officer, Ikeja Distribution Zone, copy of which was made available toPUNCH Metro, the community threatened to sue the company if it disconnected power supply to the area.
The letter signed by the committee Chairman, Chief E.O. Olubodun, and Secretary, Mr. S.A. Baderin, reads in part, “We have decided that nobody will pay the new bill until there is a reversal. We want all meters considered obsolete to be replaced immediately with pre-paid meters for proper billings.
“It is very painful for consumers to pay for what they did not use; we expect PHCN to be fair and just in dealing with us and other customers.
“The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has consistently maintained that prepaid meters are free – Mushin remains an example of a place where prepared meters were given free to residential areas.
“We again restate here that our community should be given free prepaid meters to enhance proper billings and to put a final end to estimated bills.”
The community also demanded the immediate removal of the marketer in charge of the area for improper billings.
“For instance, some three-bedroom flats are known to be paying N3,000 monthly, while another pays N23,000 per month in the same community,” it said.
The committee said its members had been paying their bills regularly and wondered why they should be treated in unjust manner.
