Declaration of emergency rule not way out – COSEG

LAGOS—The Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Group, COSEG, has described the declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states as an aberration, noting that it would not address security challenges facing the country.

Mr. Ifedayo Ogunlana, COSEG Chairman stated at a public lecture tagged “Sanctity of Life and the Nigerian Democracy” which was part of activities lined up for the first anniversary of the death of Comrade Olaitain Oyerinde, the former Principal Private Secretary to Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole.

He noted that the problems confronting Nigeria should not be tackled with force but dialogue, through a Sovereign National Conference, SNC.

His words: “It is in fact criminal for President Jonathan not to uphold the constitution he sworn to, when he cannot protect the lives and property of his subject. How can we explain several unresolved assassinations of notable and gifted Nigerians which include and not limited to Olaitan Oyerinde.

“Nobody in Nigeria today will deny that democracy is doomed,” He added that it was the belief of COSEG that the only way out of Nigerian woes is the SNC, rather than declaration of state of emergency in any part of the country.

Also speaking a Unionist, Mr. Sylvester Ejiofor stressed the need for Nigerians to respect sanctity of human life, adding that beyond building structures, it was imperative to build good characters.

“As if Nigeria is not a part of the world, even countries that are not as endowed as Nigeria, take seriously, the sanctity of lives of their citizens irrespective of their status in the society; but ours is the opposite”. he further explained.

Late Olaitan Oyerinde wife, Funke, maintained that her husband killer will not escape the arms of the law. “We believe he was killed in the line of duty by forces of retrogression determined to undermine genuine democracy in Edo State and by extension, Nigeria,” she said.
