The Vice-chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Cyprain Onyeji, has been kidnapped. Onyeji was kidnapped at about 11.30am on Wednesday.

Three policemen on duty at the university gate where the incident happened were seriously wounded while confronting the heavily armed kidnappers.

Eye witnesses said the vice- chancellor was about crossing the university main gate at Agbani when the abductors who laid ambush for him emerged from hiding.

They shot sporadically into the air, scaring away students and workers and as well overwhelmed the security personnel who ran for cover.

The policemen who were taken unawares tried to wade off the kidnappers’ raid but could not due to the superior fire power of the assailants.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Enugu State command, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the kidnap.
He said the police were already on the trail of the culprits.

The wounded police officers, according to the PPRO, were being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

The university’s public relations officer, Ossy Ugwuoti, who spoke to The Nation, said no demand has been made by the abductors.
