The launch of the Residency Card (Kaadi Igbeayo) by the Ondo State Government has been described as a tool which is capable of revolutionising and fast-tracking the socio-economic development of the state.
The Minister for Information, Mr. Labaran Maku who made the declaration in his message during the launch of the multi smart card insisted that the idea is a different pragmatic developmental policy and first of its kind in Nigeria and in the world. Maku lauded Governor Olusegun Mimiko for standing firm by building on the developmental legacies left behind by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, saying his administration has placed emphasis on social welfare in all ramifications, targeted at making life better for the people rather than for personal aggrandisement.
The Minister, who declared that Ondo State is an oasis in Yorubaland said the state is unique in politics throughout Nigeria. He described the people of the State as enlightened who refused to be ‘follow follow’, saying political observers have come to see the new drive of momentum Governor Mimiko has brought to governance in the State.
He said the victory of Governor Mimiko in the last gubernatorial election has projected the solidity of the new democratic dispensation in Nigeria. On the new Residency Card launched by the State government, the Federal Minister said it is truly revolutionary in all sense saying it is the first in Nigeria and the world. In her goodwill message at the occasion, Federal Minister of Communication and Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson represented by Dr. Ola Ogunneye promised her Ministry’s support on the provision of infrastructure to make the project succeed. Governor Olusegun Mimiko, while launching the Card said it will create happiness for the people of the State as he said he has promised to know the people by all ramifications.
The Governor said anybody that has the residency card with evidence of tax payment will have all medical treatments free for 48 hours irrespective of the kind of sickness. He listed the advantages of the cards to include: facilitation of efficient record keeping, anti-corruption solution in the public service to enable higher level of qualitative and quantitative service delivery in people oriented sub-sector such as health, education, transportation and agriculture.
Others are facilitating the systematic development of database for efficient security and surveillance purpose, facilitating the use and management of government facilities such as public transportation among others. He urged residents of the state who want to enjoy free social service in the state to get their residency cards.
Welcoming audience to the elaborate launching ceremony, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Kola Ademujimi said the card is for good governance in the State and commended Governor Mimiko for making the project a reality. In a chat with Journalists, Mr. Tunde Yadeka, Chairman of the Ondo State Information Technology Agency (SITA) said over 100,000 cards are ready for distribution to people. The card was officially launched on Tuesday.
