Illegal parking delays reconstruction of Oshodi-Apapa way – Official

Lagos – Mr Godwin Eke, the Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of Works, has said that illegal parking of trucks on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway is delaying reconstruction work on the road.

Eke, in charge of Section I of the highway, told reporters in Lagos that parking of trucks and petrol tankers constituted nuisance on the highway.

“Last month, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, we removed the tankers, but they came back after one week.

“Aside the tanker drivers, we started receiving threats from commercial motorcyclists who just come and park in Sunrise area, but the police helped to remove them,” Eke said.

He said both the ministry and the state government could not sustain the war against the trucks and tanker drivers because there was no place to park the impounded vehicles.

Eke said that when the Presidential Monitoring Team and Navy intervened, it only gave a temporary relief as the drivers returned shortly after.

He said that the level of work done on the section was about 12 per cent with the lining of drains in progress up to Cele Bus Stop.

The deputy director said also that excavation work was being slowed down by the rains.

He said that about two kilometres of road had been done to binder course level, adding that asphalt would soon be laid on the portion. (NAN)
