Tragedy recently hit Umuogu community when a middle-aged man died mysteriously in a pentecostal church in Ogrute, Igbo –Eze North Council Headquarters in Enugu State,.
The victim, identified as Samson Odugu Eke from Umuopu community was said to have left his house hale and hearty for prayers at Divine Grace Church. Few hours later, his nephew who saw him off to the main road where he boarded a motorcycle received an anonymous call on his cell phone that Samson had died.
When family members rushed to the church, Samson laid dead inside the church with blood gushing out of his nostrils and mouth. On enquiry, the family was told by one of the church ministers identified as Pastor Charles that he was not around when Samson entered the church and therefore, could not give accurate explanation about what happened to him.
According to him: “I went out to get my shirt from the drycleaner when my phone rang and I was informed of the incident. I rushed back to the church and saw a man in a pool of his blood. “I learnt that he fell from the plastic chair and knocked his head on the floor. I did not know what to do since I’ve never met him before; he is not a member of our church.
“The women standing nearby told me that they saw the cyclist that brought him to the church and he looked very sick. I reported the matter to the police and began to make contacts. That was when I called the nephew whom I learnt, saw him off that morning.”
A family source who spoke to Daily Sun said Samson only sustained a wound on one of his legs which was not serious and that the family was suspecting a foul play somewhere. The source maintained that the church members have been making frantic efforts to arrive at an amicable settlement of the matter.
Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogrute police station, Mr. Bulus Maaji confirmed on telephone that the matter was officially reported to the station. He said that preliminary investigation showed that the victim was sick before he went to the church. He said that as at yesterday, the parties had arrived at a peaceful solution but he had already sent an official report to the police headquarters in Enugu for further investigations and autopsy.
As at the time of filing this report, the corpse is still deposited at the Ogrute general hospital mortuary
