Nigerian Navy searches for hijacked oil vessel


The Nigerian Navy said on Wednesday that efforts being made to locate an oil vessel alleged to have been hijacked by pirates off the Nigerian territorial waters.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the vessel, ‘’MT Abu Dhabi Star’’, was carrying products belonging to Exxon Mobil when it was hijacked on Wednesday at about 3 a.m.

The spokesman, Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lt.-Cdr. Jerry Omodara, who confirmed the incident, told NAN that the navy had already deployed helicopter and two patrol vessels to search for the vessel and rescue the crew members.

A reliable source, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN at the command that the tanker, with 23 crew members on board, was suspected to have been hijacked by pirates who had been operating within the coast.

The Nigerian Navy had last week also chased another oil tanker allegedly hijacked within the country’s territorial waters but was later discovered around the Ondo State area with the Russians crew heading to Cotonou.
