The police in Ogun State have rescued a 17-year-old girl (name withheld) abducted by a six-man gang of kidnappers at the Agbado area of the state on Monday.
The police also said they had arrested a member of the gang and recovered some arms and ammunition from him.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, at a press conference on Wednesday said the teenager was rescued in the early hours of Wednesday when policemen apprehended a vehicle with which the suspects were conveying her to another hideout around Ijebu-Itele.
Okoye said the police also recovered from the vehicle various arms and ammunition such as a double-barrelled gun, a locally-made pistol, a dagger and a sword and three live cartridges.
The police commissioner said when the teenager was abducted, her parents reported the matter at Agbado Police Division.
Okoye said the suspects had switched off the generator on the premises of the victim’s parents with a view to making one of the building occupants to come out and check what might have gone wrong with the generator. The victim, who had come out, was subsequently abducted.
The CP said, “I ordered the Area Commander and all the DPOs to comb the area in order to save the life of the teenager.
“Our efforts eventually paid off as a member of the gang was arrested in a Mazda car in the early hours of today (Wednesday) at Ijebu-Itele when they were taking the teenager to another location.
“The command commends the DPO of Itele-Ijebu division Mr. Danile Okere, and his team for arresting the suspect.‘’
The police commissioner however promised that the command would do everything possible to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.
He also assured the residents of the state of adequate security of their lives and property.
One of the parents of the victim, who also pleaded anonymity, said he had asked his daughter to check why the generator suddenly stopped when the kidnappers took advantage of that and abducted her.
He said, “I was surprised when the generator stopped because there was fuel in it; as soon as my daughter came out they put gun on her head and brought her inside.
“They requested for money and I told them I don’t have anything but they went away with my daughter and my Jeep. They later called on Tuesday morning to demand a ransom of N50m. I don’t know where to find that amount and I really thank God that the police came to our rescue. Nigerians need to learn and know about this new trick of the men of the underworld.”
The teenager also described her experience in the hands of her abductors as “horrible,” adding that she “was just blindfolded and taken to a forest.
“They gave me food on the first night but I refused to take anything on Tuesday when they threatened to kill me if my parents refused to pay the amount they requested.
“They did not beat nor manhandle me at all, they were just shouting to instil fear in me.”
