A policeman attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command on Sunday foiled a robbery operation in Ikeja, killing one armed robbery suspect and arresting another.
Punch Metro learnt that the suspects, who were four in number, had attempted to rob the occupants of a Toyota Camry car on Lateef Jakande Street, Agidingbi.
The robbers, who were riding on two unregistered motorcycles, were said to be in possession of sophisticated weapons and were about to rob the driver of the car when the policeman sighted them and opened fire.
Our correspondent learnt that a shootout ensued between the robbers and the policeman during which one of the robbers was killed on the spot while another one was arrested. The other suspects however escaped.
The incident was said to have caused a traffic snarl as some motorists abandoned their vehicles and fled.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the incident occurred adjacent the Nigerian Bottling Company.
She said the suspect arrested had been taken to SARS Department and investigation was ongoing.
She said, “Around 1pm on Sunday, four robbers on two unregistered motorcycles attempted to rob a Toyota Camry.
“A policeman who was at the scene engaged them in a shootout. One of the robbers died on the spot, while two others escaped with bullet wounds. The last robber was arrested after the said policeman called for backup.”
