Police Dismiss Robbers’ Letter To Lambe Residents

The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed as an “empty threat,” letters purportedly sent  to Lambe residents in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, by robbers.

Residents of the affected areas have also been assured of their safety by the Command, which maintained that the threat is nothing but that of cowards.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, who said he was commenting on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, urged residents to go about their businesses and remain calm because the police will protect them.

“We are aware of the letter and we are not sleeping over the matter. Some people have been calling me about the letters pasted on some houses in the area and I have been telling them to remain calm. We have contacted the DPO and the DCO of the area and told them what to do. ” The Command has taken measures to protect residents. We have told the officers on ground to get across to us if the manpower is not enough. We will reinforce them with more officers from the Command, if necessary. We are concerned with the security of life and properties, not only of the residents in Lambe but across the state,” Adejobi assured.

Three letters written in Yoruba language were pasted on walls and streets in Lambe Tuesday with the writers informing residents to expect them ‘very soon.’ “If you like, inform the police or your security men or OPC, you will just lose your lives,” they warned.

Describing themselves as friends of residents in Lambe community, the ‘robbers’ called on residents to get ready for their arrival and cooperate with them.

“You residents of this area, be prepared to receive your friends very soon.  If you like, inform the police or your security men or OPC, you will just lose your lives. What is important is to cooperate with us and to get ready to give us a warm welcome,” the robbers said in the short letter.

The letter ends with these words: “We your friends, robbers.”.

The letters were pasted on many walls on Akin Akindele, Community Road and Jelili Popoola streets.

Following this, panic and confusion have enveloped the community with a residents describing Lambe as ‘the playground of armed robbers.’
