Prof. Oshodi announces Oshiomhole as the winner of Edo election

I Prof. Oshodi as the Returning Officer, , hereby certify  that I was the returning officer of the July 14 governorship election and  hereby declare that Oshiomhole having satisfied the requirement of the law and having scored the highest number of votes cast is hereby declared winner.’’ punchnews reports:

With that declaration, Adams Oshiomhole, the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, became the winner of Saturday’s governorship poll in Edo State.

Prof. Osayuki Oshodi certified Oshiomhole winner with 477,478 vote.

According to the results read by Oshodi at the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday morning, Oshiomhole’s closest rival, Maj.-Gen.Charles Airhiavbere (retd.) governorship of the Peoples Democratic Party, came a distant second with 144,235 votes, while  Chief Solomon Edebiri of the All Nigeria Peoples Party  scored 3,642 votes to take the third position.

Mr. Roland Izeobuwe of Congress for Progressive Change came fourth with 2,793 votes and  Mr. Frank Ukonga of Social Democratic Movement Party followed with  807 votes.

Oshodi, who is the Vice-Chancellor of  the University of Benin, further announced that Mr. Andrew Igwemoh of Labour Party scored  604 votes, while Mr. Paul Orunmwese of the National Conscience Party scored  540 votes.

According to him, Oshiomhole won in the 18 local government areas of the state and satisfied the requirements of the law to be declared winner of the poll.

The PDP in the state on Sunday said it would meet to take  a position on the outcome of the election.

Oshiomhole thanked President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the outcome of the election was a product of the President’s determination to enthrone credible democracy in Nigeria.

He said, “I want to appreciate Mr. President for his resolve and public pronouncement that he would provide adequate security for the people and the INEC staff before, during and after the election.

“I am glad that Mr President kept to his words of assurance that there would be no thuggery, hooliganism and violence during the Edo governorship election.”

He told journalists at a news conference that the President had led by example,.

“He is indeed a statesman, a man of honour because there was adequate and effective presence of security agents on ground. I am impressed because the Army actually played a neutral role in the election,’’ he said.

The ACN candidate congratulated his opponents, saying he was willing to collaborate with them with a view to moving the state to a higher level.

“We are all Edo people and should live and think alike if we have to bring rapid development to our people rather than dissipate our energies on frivolities such as ethnic politics,’’ Oshiomhole said

Analysis of the governor’s victory shows that of the total votes garnered by the ACN candidate, over 125, 331 came from Ikpoba/Okha and Oredo Local Government Areas, in the Edo South Senatorial District.

Oshiomhole recorded 58,809 votes in Ikpoba/Okha LGA and 66, 522 votes in Oredo LGA, while Airhivbere of PDP scored a total of 15, 849 votes from the two councils.

Other areas where Oshiomhole got large number of votes included Egor LGA,  (50,623) and his own local government area, Etsako West LGA, where he got 44, 962.

Airhiavbere is from Egor LGA, where he got 3, 486 votes.

The ACN got 26,163 votes in the Odubu and Ize-Iyamu zone, and PDP, 8, 716 votes.

There were 1.6 million registered voters but the total votes cast in the election was

647, 478.
