Professional Sureties Arrested In Court

Two ‘professional’ sureties were arrested by the police in Lagos on Tuesday for engaging in a brawl at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court premises over N20,000.

The men, Macaulay Kayode, 42, who resides at 12, Tolulope Street, Iju-Ishaga, and Segun Wilkey, 56, of 52, Ojo Street, Ijegun, Lagos, injured each other in the fight.

The two men also tore each other’s clothes.

A witness said that Wilkey alleged that he paid Macaulay N20,000 as part payment to stand surety for a client in a fraud case but he breached the agreement.

The witness said that when Wilkey saw Macaulay in the court premises he challenged him and a fight ensued between them. The two men were arrested by Inspector Okoi Edet, a prosecutor at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for constituting a nuisance in the court premises.

The prosecutor said: “They will be taken to Area ‘F’ Police Station and eventually charged to court for fighting.”

Mr. Adeola Babatope, a lawyer, said that the men should be arraigned for a breach of the peace. He said: “Their attitude was highly unruly. These middle-aged men fighting and constituting a nuisance is abnormal. “They must be charged to court.
