As part of efforts to ensure a peaceful conduct of the July 14 governorship election in Edo State, security agencies have drawn far-reaching measures prepared by the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to guarantee the safety of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other electoral officials that will be engaged for the poll.
ICCES is the platform pooling all military and paramilitary agencies in Nigeria – including the National Security Adviser’s Office, the army, navy, air force, police, civil defence corps, National Intelligence Agency, Federal Road Safety Commission, Immigration Service, Customs Service, Prisons Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and State Security Service – in a coordinated operation to secure election environment in the country.
The platform was established in December 2010 at the instance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
At a meeting Friday in Abuja to prepare for the Edo State election, the inter-agency body said the safety of Youth Corps members and all other officials participating in the July election would not be compromised.
Security chiefs representing their various organisations also said no effort would be spared to ensure peaceful conduct of the poll.
