Four political parties on Sunday hailed the re-election of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State.
The four parties said the governor, who was the candidate for the Action Congress of Nigeria, deserved the victory.
They said the thrashing of the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, Maj.-Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (retd.), in Saturday’s governorship election, did not come to them as a surprise.
The political parties were the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party, Labour Party and the Progressive Peoples Alliance.
The ACN in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also praised the courage and determination of the people of Edo State, who it said defied all odds to vote and defend their votes in order to return Oshiomhole for another four years of “superlative” action.
The party said the people of Edo had shown, by their action, that true sovereignty lay with the people.
The statement said, “The courageous and determined people of Edo refused to be intimidated by the massive deployment of security forces by the PDP-controlled Federal Government.
“They overcame the shenanigans of a colluding Independent National Electoral Commission and rendered irrelevant the dirty tricks of misguided moneybags. In the end, they shut out the do-nothing PDP.”
It said the biggest lesson for the PDP was that no good advert could sell a bad product, which it said the PDP had become in Nigeria.
On its part, the ANPP in a statement by its National Chairman, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said members of the party were happy with the result of the governor’s re-election.
He said the victory was well deserved, and thanked the “people of Edo for being resolute pillars of democracy by insisting and ensuring that the votes counted and the voter mattered as it should be in a participatory democracy.”
Also, the LP Chairman, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, in a statement, said the governor’s victory though hard –earned, also showed the resolve of Nigerian people to always reward performance.
In a similar vein, the National Chairman of the PPA, Chief Sam Nkire, said Oshiomhole’s meant a rejection of PDP not only in Edo but throughout the country.
He said the PDP had squandered the mandate Nigerians gave it in the last 13 years and should not expect people to trust the party with their votes anymore.
Also, former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, also described the victory of Oshiomhole as a new chapter in the nation’s democratic struggle.
He said the election was more than Oshiomhole and Edo State.
