Dear Godwin Obaseki,

Compliments of the day to you sir, I write this brief piece to raise a troubling concern and I hope it will invoke your appropriate action as I pray it meets you well.

Section 14 subsection 2b of the Nigerian constitution says that–> Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from where the government draws its powers and authority. This simply means that power belongs to the people.

Members of the Edo state House of Assembly were elected by members of their constituencies and the authority they wield is birthed from the imprimatur of the people. Just as they were elected so you were supposedly “elected” and you share equal authority as the constitution proclaims.

To this end sir, it is wrong, unreasonable and morally unlawful for you to withhold the constituency funds of the four PDP members of the Edo state house of assembly for 2016, 2017 and 2018. One has tried to reason it out as to the rationale behind it but on all fronts sir, it makes absolutely no sense and I pray thee that you reconsider your stand.

Speaking with some members so affected, it was said that you demanded that they crossed over to the APC and until then, they will have their constituency funds withheld by the state government.
In all fairness your excellency, I expected some level of political hygiene to be experienced under your leadership by reason of your education and exposure but you have blown that lid away by some of your and in my opinion, very kindergarten actions and chief of which is this.

While one would love to write you a letter with words that would not sound arrogant but rather words that will make you see reason with the thoughts shared, it is not lost on me that one needs to express himself as should be at some point in time. Your Excellency, that action is callous and should be beneath you or any reasonable person. You have denied and deprived majorly the Esan people of the dividends these constituency projects would have brought to them and this is the highest level of injustice to the people.

Is governance not actually a relay race of some kind! Should the legislature not compliment the executive and vice versa! Will it not be to the overall interest of the people if these projects are executed in their domain! Will it not snowball into somewhat of an achievement for you! Or sir do you think you will be governor forever!

Amazingly as lugubriously so, the APC state chairman is from Esan land and while we all agree that the man has no balls to speak truth to power, there is a sense in which he should have intervened at least for the benefit of his people. Senior members of cabinet hail from Esan land and we are not surprised that they have played the junkyard dog and can’t interrogate this shallow action.

Finally, Sir, let me “pleadingly” request that you consider not politics alone but the welfare of the affected people and released the constituency funds for 2016,2017 and 2018 to the PDP lawmakers of the state assembly that they may execute their constituency projects for the people who actually own the mandate and who own the power.

Edo state should make progress and irrespective of the biases or political proclivities of those in government, the people and only the people should be the focus, we must extinguish and utterly ostracize bitter politicking and birth some hygiene in the politics of Edo state.

Thanks and God bless you, sir!
