Some Edo Youth under the aegis of Concerned Edo Youth against Police brutality has raised alarm over the sudden disappearance of five youth who were arrested by the IGP Intelligence Response Team in Benin.
In a press release during the weekend and make available to Naija Centre News and signed by its President, Emmanuel Aigbogun and the Secretary, Wilson Imasuen, they accused the IGP Intelligence Response Team for exhibiting the highest level of barbarism and professional misconduct.
They call on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the Police Officers and bring them to book to serve as a deterrent to other police officers who are bent on destroying the image of police.
They have this to say.
Some members of the Inspector General Of Police, Intelligence Response Unit (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force who are supposed to be professionally decent and professional in their professional modus operandi and modus vivendi took five Edo Youth including a member of Joint Legal Action Aids namely : (Enodumwenben Ogbeide, Nicholas Okoro, Igbinovia Osayamwanbor, Osakpanmwan Uhumwangho and Evans Egharevba) of Iguomon Community, Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State to unknown destination without the prior knowledge of the Police Authority in Edo State over Community dispute between two Communities that had been decided by the Supreme Court.
We were briefed that the Officers from IGP Intelligence Response Unit invaded the houses of the suspects in a Commando liked style as early as 2 am on the 28th day of February 2018 and allegedly beat up a pregnant wife of one of the suspects like an animal and took her phones and her thirty thousand naira (#30, 000) forcefully.
It must be noted that virtually all the units at Edo State Command and Zone 5 are abreast of the community disputes as a result of series of the petition that had been written by both parties to that effect and arrests had been made and the allegations were discovered
The IGP Intelligent Response Unit who is to lead by example should not involve itself in this mess.
Enough is enough.
We hereby pray the following prayers:
1. That the suspects should be released unconditionally and unhurt as we are not aware of their whereabouts.
2. The Police officers involved should be disciplined in line with the Police Act for engaging in professional misconduct.
3. That the IGP Tactical Teams operating in the States should desist forthwith from despising the offices of the State Commissioners of Police.
We had meetings with the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 and Edo CP on the matter, we are very optimistic of justice and equity.
