Police said Hassan Ayinde claimed he was an army colonel, and approached the traditional ruler of Agbado, Adedayo Shyllum in his palace on Monday soliciting for money to purchase ram for the Eidel Kabir celebration.

The suspect, said to be from Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, pressed the monarch to convince him of his role in the presidency as an aide; but the monarch, suspecting foul play, informed the police.

The man was arrested by the police after interrogation. He confessed to the police that he was a dismissed Air Force officer, trying to make ends meet, a spokesperson for the police said.

He further claimed that he attended the military school in 1979 and posted to Zuru Kebbi State as last corporal; and that he attended the Nigeria Defence Academy in 1980 and passed out in 1985. The fake colonel said he worked with the presidency in 1997 before he was dismissed in the year 1999 as a Wing Commander.

When contacted, Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the case, adding that, the suspect also claimed to be residing at the National Defence College.

“He is cooling his feet in our custody and will be charged to court at the end of our investigation,” the spokesperson said.

The command appealed to the general public to beware of such fraudsters who may want to dupe them of their earnings and always contact the police whenever they are in doubt.
