A report indicates that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has ordered the arrest of the spokesperson to a former President, Ibrahim Babangida over a statement earlier issued.
Prince Kassim Afegbua had released a statement allegedly issued by Babangida, urging President Muhammadu Buhari not to contest for a second term in 2019.
According to the statement, Babangida urged Nigerians to allow Buhari finish his term, citing poor performance as his reasons.
Minutes later, another statement was released discrediting a statement earlier released by Babangida Spokesman. However, in an interview with Channels TV, Afegbua said he couldn’t release a statement if it wasn’t ordered by his boss.
He said “The statement is in order. IBB did not hold any press conference in Minna. It was overzealous people that issued that statement of his denial. I wouldn’t issue any statement without his approval. I have spoken with him and he said he has not recanted the statement,”
In a dramatic turn, the Inspector General Police “ordered for the arrest of Kassim Afegbua for issuing a fake statement. He was advised to submit himself to the Force Headquarters in 24 hours or face arrest.”
